DOWN THE MEMORY LANE: THE BIRTH OF A DEPARTMENT
Established in 1947, the Department of
Chemistry is one of the oldest departments of Darrang College.
Since its establishment it has contributed immensely towards the advancement
and dissemination of knowledge and higher education in the entire northern bank
of the river Brahmaputra. It has strived ahead
with a golden history and played a major role in promoting chemistry education
in the entire region. With a galaxy of alumni from oil and natural gas sector
to chemical and pharmaceutical industries, from academic institutions to
research organizations and from banking sector to the judiciary, the department
can boost of its academic excellence and quality education.

Chemistry was introduced as subject in the
intermediate classes in 1947 vide the government order, Govt. L/No. ECL 68/47/75 of 12/47 with affiliation from Calcutta University. In 1948 it got affiliation
from Gauhati University vide memo No. GU/L/N E/9066/1/48/7364, dated 3.7.1948. In
1960 B.Sc classes were introduced in Darrang
College and in 1962 Gauhati University affiliated Chemistry upto
degree classes vide memo No. IC/I62/9315 dated 10.7.62, EC resolution No.7
dated 15-3-62.
Chemistry as a major subject in undergraduate course was introduced in 1965 and
in 1966 it was affiliated by the Gauhati
University vide memo No.
G/EC/2/65/10668-77,dated 14-6-65.The first teacher of the Department was Prof.
Dhirendralal Mukherjee (1945-51).
